St. Louis and Decatur, Illinois Boy Scout Councils Approve Merger
September 27, 2018
The Boy Scouts of America’s Greater St. Louis Area Council and Lincoln Trails Council, headquartered in Decatur, IL, will merge to form one unified council effective January 1, 2019. The merger decision was approved by a vote of each council’s voting membership this week.
The newly merged council, which will retain the Greater St. Louis Area Council name, will serve nearly 69,000 youth throughout 63 counties in Missouri and Illinois.
“Scouting helps youth reach their full potential, strengthens families and builds stronger communities,” said Ronald S. Green, Scout Executive of the Greater St. Louis Area Council. “Merging with the Lincoln Trails Council will allow us to deliver our life-changing programs to more young men and women.”
By combining efforts, a unified council will offer better quality programming and service to Scouting families in the Lincoln Trails Council which has been financially stressed and faced declining membership over the past several years. This new opportunity allows for more resources, such as the Greater St. Louis Area Council’s innovative STEM programs and state-of-the-art camp facilities, to serve youth in a way that will help Scouting thrive throughout central Illinois.
“Merging with the Greater St. Louis Area Council creates a firm foundation for Scouting to thrive in our region for years to come,” said Dan Martini, council president for the Lincoln Trails Council. “The purpose of this merger is to bring stronger Scouting to more kids and expand our programs in areas that we are currently under serving. We are ready to enhance the Scouting program for the youth of east central Illinois.”
The Greater St. Louis Area Council, which has seen membership growth in each of the last two years, had 66,757 youth participate in its programs last year while the Lincoln Trails Council served 2,149 young people.
